Hello! Welcome to Dirty Water Clay!
My name is Abbey. I’m originally from Oklahoma but currently living in Boston. I’m a both a Paramedic and ER RN. Travel nurse actually. I work night shift and typically keep a night shift sleep schedule. We'll get back to why that matters in a second.
Over the summer I went to an outdoor market, and there were all kinds of vendors. Of the many vendors there, I saw about 10 different vendors that sold polymer clay earrings. The cool thing about it was that every tent had different colors and styles available to choose from. I left there with about 10 pairs of earrings purchased from a handful of different vendors.
When I got home I was admiring my purchases and I thought about how cool it was that these women all made clay earrings, but they each made them so differently. I had seen several pairs I liked, but wished they had different hardware or different colors that would have made them more my taste. I thought, "if I had made those, I would have made them like this." The more I thought about it, the more I thought, "Why can't I make those? I bet I could do it!" So, I started to do some research and follow some makers on social media.
I ordered some supplies from a few different places, and within a week I had what I thought was everything I needed to start making. (Plot twist: It wasn't). This is where staying up all night comes into play. It's peaceful in the middle of the night when most of the world is asleep, and everything is quiet. But it can also get boring. I had been looking for something more productive to do than sit around and watch TV and scroll social media.
The process was pure trial and error. And I found that I really enjoyed it. Even the error part. Believe it or not, it was kind of relaxing! I made several pairs, just for fun. I played with colors and textures. I custom mixed colors I couldn't find in the stores. I thought of what I'd like to see in stores, and what I would purchase if it were available, and then I created it! It was cool to make something from beginning to end.
After I'd made a few pairs I was proud of, and a lot of pairs I wasn't, I sent some photos to friends. Much to my surprise, almost everyone I sent photos to picked a pair they liked and asked if they could buy them. At this point I had about 15 pairs of earrings I'd made, and kept receiving requests to buy them. So, I decided I would start a business! More research ensued. A LOT more research. And from that, Dirty Water Clay was born!
Each pair is small batch and limited-edition release.
They are handmade from start to finish. Each pair starts as a brick of clay and is them rolled, cut, sometimes painted, baked, drilled, and then assembled. By me.
All pieces are light weight and weigh less than 5 grams. Yes, I weighed them.
I hope you enjoy wearing them as much as I enjoyed making them!
